Can You Really Save The Universe With The Dr Who Sonic Screwdriver?

Every new fan of Dr Who has to have a Dr Who sonic screwdriver! My son can do anything with his, it not just opens doors, it cools his supper, helps him tidy away the toys, anything you can think off, his Dr Who sonic screwdriver can do it (or help him do it)!  Having looked into the history of the sonic screwdriver, I think he may have the right idea…

The Dr Who sonic screwdriver first appeared on our screens in 1968.Since then it has been in and out of fashion and changed design a few times.  One of the Doctors assistants, Romana, even made her own sonic screwdriver, while the doctor gave Sarah Jane Smith a sonic lipstick, so there are defiantly variations to the design.

The latest Dr Who sonic screwdriver is rather a good one.  It glows blue at the end and makes a humming noise.  The capabilities of the sonic screwdriver are also enhanced and it is used by the Doctor for all sorts of new things.  The sonic does have its limitations, in an encounter with the Slitheen the Doctor tries to suggest that he will use his sonic screwdriver to convert a bottle of port into a weapon.  The Slitheen realize that this is not within the capabilities of either the Doctor or his trusty sonic screwdriver and the Doctor suggests an alternative route – “Run”.  In the episode ‘The Doctor Dances’, Captain Jack makes fun of the Doctors sonic screwdriver and tries to impress Rose with his sonic blaster.

The Master does get the icing on the cake, however, when he arrives with a laser screwdriver.  The laser screwdriver has an altogether different function to the sonic screwdriver.  The Dr Who sonic screwdriver is not a weapon, the Doctor tells us in Doomsday that the sonic screwdriver will not kill, wound or maim.  It is a tool which the doctor uses to his advantage.  The Master, however, has a different agenda, his laser screwdriver is designed to kill and also to age the Doctor, using the Lazarus technology.

We also discover that a new sonic screwdriver can be replaced by the TARDIS, but for those of us who do not have access to a TARDIS, Character toys make a good substitute.  The Dr Who sonic screwdriver comes in two basic designs, either a pen or torch design.  Which ever you choose you can be sure that any child will reveal the depths of their imagination when they tell you all the things which their sonic screwdriver can do!

Dr Who K9: It Wouldn't Be The Same Without Him

The Dr Who K9 character has been around for a while, in fact it was in 1977 that we were first introduced to the lovable robotic dog.  We are however told that the dog was created in the year 5000 by Professor Marius on as asteroid near Titan.  The creation of the Dr Who K9 character added an extra dimension to the Doctor and his relationships.  The ‘tin dog’ as K9 gets named is more advanced than the earths current technology and therefore has the appeal of being powerful, advanced and loveable.

The Dr Who K9 character has helped four of the doctors, starting with the fourth Doctor.  His last appearance was with the ninth Doctor at the school reunion.  This is an episode where the Doctor meets up with Sarah Jane Smith again.  Sarah Jane has looked after K9 since she last traveled with the doctor.  K9 and Sarah Jane have continued to work as a team through the Sarah Jane adventures, during which they continue the doctors work on earth.  This is a heart wrenching episode for any K9 fans as K9 sacrifices his life for his mission.  However, the Doctor, could not leave the millions of fans in tears, so he rebuilds K9 and leaves him as a companion for Sarah Jane.

Just as the daleks are defined by their declaration to ‘exterminate’ so K9 is defined by his speech.  K9 is always respectful and polite, calling the person for whom he is currently working ‘master’ or ‘mistress’.  He also has several expression which he produces, especially at moments of crisis; ‘affirmative’, and ‘insufficient data’.  K9 will often be savior of a situation and the viewer is left on the edge of his or her seat wondering if this will be an ‘affirmative’ or ‘insufficient data’ moment.

The relationship of K9 and the Doctor is discussed in the school reunion episode.  Sarah Jane and Micky Smith are in the car waiting and Sarah Jane is telling Micky about the doctor and how he always he does not like to travel alone.  It is during this conversation that Micky comically compares himself to the ‘tin dog’ and then realizes that the Doctor does not take him seriously.Little does Micky realize that he's being compared to one of the most loved Dr Who characters and that K9 is an advanced, intelligent, logical robot who has saved the day incalculable times.
